Getting to the first page of google
When a site first opens, it might rank good for a little while, but then it will slip to a better position for the sites age. Some people might call this the sandbox effect.
For one of my forums, it took about a year to get to the first page. But for my wifes forum, it only took about 3 months.
Quality backlinks - I attribute my wifes ranking to a good domain name and quality back link building. the backlinks was something that I did not understand until several months ago. I thought you just posted a link to your site. But that is not correct.
When I launched my wifes forum, I added a link to her site in my signature with important keywords. So when googlebot hit the first links, it grabbed the correct keywords first.
The backlinks are supposed to be hyper linked key words. Lets say you want to rank well in google searches for digital pictures. Then every link you post to your site should contain the words "digital pictures". If the backlinks contain "visit my digital pictures site" - then google sill see "visit my" as an important keyword.
One of the most important things that someone can do to rank well in google is to have a google webmaster account and check the "what googlebot sees" in their account. This will let you know "what" google sees as the content of your site. Once you get a grasp of what google sees on your site, then you can start tweaking the meta description and back links to change what google sees.
Meta Description - Very, very important. Do not put trash words first. Such as "A general discussion forum on digital pictures". The most important keywords are last in that example.
Put the target nitch keywords first in your meta description. And I dont mean, 3rd, 4th or 5th - most important keyword FIRST!!!
Site Maps - Even though google is good at crawling a page, its not perfect. Get a site map generator installed on your site and submit that site map to your google webmaster tools.
Time and Patience - Most website owners give up after 6 months. That is when things start to pick up. But do not expect a lot of traffic until a year after your site or forum has been open.
So do not expect a lot of traffic right off the bat, unless you run a full page ad in the new york times.
Success has a cost, and that cost is lots of hard work.
Your Google account and webmaster tools - is maybe the best tool you have for promoting your site. Learn it and use it.

As far as I know, Google doesn't give value on the meta description to get rank in serp.

Re: Getting to the first page of google
In order to get good SERPS you need to have plenty of content and most importantly descriptive titles. Meta tags in html are discarded by most search engines.
As of me i have 3 sites getting first page ranking in google, but i only accomplished that after 4yrs. Time is also important for first page ranking. My site was also listed in dmoz way back in 2003.

Re: Getting to the first page of google
Ok, then explain to me this.
My sons site went online in July, 2008. At that time it used mambo bridged with a SMF forum.
Mambo was not working out, so I swapped to MKPortal. In the swap, all of the post on the site was lost. The forum remained intact, just the home page CMS was swapped out.
Around September 2008, I realized that MKPortal was not going to do the job either. So the home page CMS was swapped again and once again all of the post were lost. The forum remained intact. MKPortal was removed and wordpress was installed in its place.
From September to November, my sons site went from page 50+, to page 1. In fact, at one time I could not even find his site in google for a certain keyword. I started at page 1, went through page 50 and did not see it. A few weeks later, his site appeared on page 1 at #5.
The meta description contains some of the most important keywords for your site.

Agreed! but i still believe it is discounted by google. I never used meta keywords in my sites (i own about 20 sites) still i managed to get first page in google result for many keywords. i have never promoted any my sites and just because of simplicity and SEO it gets good rankings in google and of course traffic!

Getting to the first page of google
i have two websites built on the same keyword and hosted on the same provider. one of them is 2 years old, the other one was created a few time ago. the first site was on the first page in google search.
now, the second site is placed in first places in google search but the first site disappeared. some times they shift back. the second one disappeared and the first site is in first places.
can i have both together on first page in google search?

Re: Getting to the first page of google
i would say 90% most important is writing best titles. Its very hard to do unless you have good writing skills and good english.

Getting to the first page of google
have gazed into my crystal ball, and it is my opinion that the next Google Page Rank update will occur on the 29 July.
Now would be a good time to build up some more back links.

Re: Getting to the first page of google
if you manage to get your site in first 3 results on google, you can earn 6 figure income, if not five.

Getting to the first page of google
Hi Peter,
There are lots of exentions and modules such as "BIGSHOT Google Analytics" availiable, do these provide any advanages over the manual method? I also thought that Google Analytics javascript had to be added to every page. I take it this is not the case.
Thanks.
